The consequences of indecision:
In life we have to make decisions all the time, like where to attend college, what type of job we want, or where to buy a house. We rarely have a problem when faced with favorable decision like chocolate or vanilla ice cream if you are like me you chose both, but in life we are not always given favorable choices. As adults we make decision and accept the consequences for how things turn out, however when we are faced with difficult decisions we resist doing anything hoping the problem will go away. I have been there also and one thing I know for sure, time waits for no man. When you resist making a decision it leaves you little or no time to make an alternate decision if you change your mind or something goes wrong. What is indecision; it is the inability to decide, sometimes there are reasons for indecision such as you are trying to gather all the facts, the decision you have to make will affect more people than just yourself, or the decision is too unfavorable or bad that you resist making any decision at all. I am a true believer on waiting on God (your higher spirit) and he will lead you, however If you are not in tune with your higher spirit, intuition, or inner voice whatever you like to call it you may not hear the whispers that are telling you which direction to turn or you ignore that voice within. When I decided to go to grad school I really did not want to go back to school but I wanted to improve my financial and career prospects. I changed my major twice within the first 6 months and was told by my enrollment counselor I would not be able to change again and receive transfer credit so I had to be sure I wanted to stay with my last choice of major. I did not take long to decide, I knew what I had to do, and I am not suggesting I am better than anyone else I was given a critical deadline with no more wiggle room and I had to make a decision. In this case there was a short time frame for me to decide and I am glad I did not lament to long and will be graduating within the next few months. I know some decisions are more serious than what to major in graduate school; however there are consequences for indecision no matter how life altering the decision can be.
The reason for indecision is usually fear. We are afraid to make the wrong or unfavorable decision so we make no decision at all. We are afraid of facing the evitable when making decision such as; your car is no longer working properly and you cannot afford to fix it or obtain a better vehicle. You are faced with the decision to junk the car but you resist; the car breaks down on the road, you spend hundreds trying to fix it, or your mechanic tells you he’s unable to fix it. The decision to junk the car will mean you have to take public transportation or carpool. I have been in this situation too when my beloved Nissan Altima started smoking on the New Jersey Turnpike and I had to make it to the Bronx NY. I lamented over my decision to junk that car due to a busted head gasket I couldn’t fix so I parked the car without an updated inspection sticker and received my share of tickets which was the price I paid for my indecision. I eventually lost the car and paid off all the tickets but resisting the inevitable was pricey. Indecision has a cost not always with dollars but with the feelings described below:
1. Unhappiness
2. Stagnancy
3. Stress
4. Confusion
5. Unproductive
6. Anger
Now that we have discussed; what indecision is, reasons for indecision, and the price of indecision I will tell you how to avoid the pitfalls of being indecisive. To face life changing decision try to obtain as much information as possible. It was very important that I knew after 6 months my decision to change my school major would result in me losing transfer credits. Find out if you have a deadline to know in advance the timeframe you are working with. List the choices available then narrow down from there. Gathering all the facts about the decision is extremely important as well to know all the options. Bring all the parties involved in the decision process together to relieve the pressure of making the decision alone. If you are face with 1 or 2 choice and neither are favorable then think of a plan B such as; you need to sell/foreclose your house so start looking into renting, buying a condo, or moving with family. You should not allow fear to make you indecisive because indecision can have financial and emotional cost. The more information you have and the sooner you act it will allow you to make the best decision possible. Comment on the questions below and let's discuss
